Calysta CEO To Speak at EU-Sponsored Our Ocean Conference in Malta

Menlo Park, CA – October 4, 2017 – Calysta’s FeedKind® protein is poised to contribute to increasing global food security while enabling the Blue Economy.  Alan Shaw, Ph.D., Calysta President and CEO, will highlight the company’s successful development program Friday at the EU’s Our Ocean conference, being held this week in Malta.  FeedKind protein is a family of natural, sustainable and traceable feed ingredients for livestock, fish and pets.

“We are affirming our commitment to enabling the Blue Economy and promoting sustainable aquaculture by providing a sustainable key feed ingredient.  We expect FeedKind protein to reach the commercial market in 2019, providing the aquaculture industry with the first scalable alternative protein that requires no wild caught fish,” Dr. Shaw said.   “FeedKind protein requires no agricultural land, a fraction of the fresh water required by traditional agricultural products, and does not compete with the human food chain in any way.  This advance is the result of an estimated $500 million of investment over the past 30 years by Calysta, our partners and legacy investors.  It confirms our belief in the potential for this product to impact a problem of global proportions.”

“This week’s Our Ocean Conference again focuses the world’s attention on the coming dual crises we face – feeding our planet and saving our ocean,” Dr. Shaw added.  “These can only be solved by initiatives built on international vision supported by practical, real world tools.  We at Calysta look forward to bringing our expertise to the table for this urgent challenge.”

FeedKind production uses 77-98% less water and >99% less land than alternative ingredients such as soy or wheat proteins.  FeedKind has been proved to be a complete fishmeal replacement for major farmed seafood species, including salmon, trout and shrimp, which could enable the creation of diets free from marine ingredients. Additionally, FeedKind protein has been shown to help maintain a healthy gut and improve absorption of key nutrients.

Customer samples of FeedKind protein are now being produced at Calysta’s market introduction facility in the United Kingdom.  Ground was broken in April, 2017 on a 37-acre commercial scale FeedKind production facility in Memphis, TN by NouriTech™, a partnership between Calysta, Cargill, and other investors. The first phase of the NouriTech plant is expected to come online in 2019 and to produce up to 200,000 metric tons of FeedKind protein per year when at full capacity.
